Gathering existing information

Collecting all information produced previously in a "hard form" -- reports, planning documents, legal documents, maps, satellite images, aerial photographs, and old photographs -- is almost always the best way to start the PCRA process. Often, a great deal of good quality information already exists, allowing the researchers to substantially reduce the number of, or to redirect, assessment activities. Plans for PCRA efforts in the field should therefore be kept open until after an appraisal of existing documented information has been completed. It is also critical to evaluate the existing information and to use relevant and current but not obsolete reports or data.
