Using satellite telemetry, this site tracks the green turtles of the Turtle Islands at the border of Sabah, Malaysia and Tawi-Tawi, Philippines. The tracking results tell some very interesting stories about these endangered species'  time around the islands and their migration.

The Turtle Islands are the first trans-frontier protected area for sea turtles in the world and Southeast Asia's single most important green turtle conservation area

Sea turtles are completely harmless creatures. For millions of years, they have survived many of nature's dangers. It is only now, as human populations are soaring, that they are threatened by extinction. You can help by helping keep our oceans clean and healthy and by keeping the following in mind.

1. Please do not kill or harm turtles in any way.
There are now fewer and fewer turtles in the Philipippines, and every turtle makes a difference!

2. Please do not take eggs from the turtles' nests.

3. Please do not sell or buy sea turtles (dead or live), their eggs, their meat, or any products made from turtle shells.

4. Please report any trade in turtles and turtle products to the nearest DENR office.

5. If you happen to come upon a live turtle with a metal tag attached to one of its flippers (those flat "legs"), please write down the following information:
  • the number(s) carved onto one side of the metal tag(s);
  • the return address carved onto the other side of the tag;
  • the species;
  • the condition of the turtle and what it was doing if it was alive when spotted;
  • the date and place where you spotted the turtle.

6. Do not remove the tag if the turtle is alive.
Maybe in a few years somebody else will find the turtle and can report her location.

7. Please report your find to the Pawikan Conservation Project (PCP), to the DENR office nearest you, or to us.
The tag may have been attached by PCP or by a similar project in another country. We will find out and let them know. Turtle managers in all countries work closely together and they will be excited to find out where their turtle has gone!

8. Please inform the nearest DENR Office in your area even if the turtle you find does not have a tag.
The local DENR Office will tag and release the turtle, and send the report to the PCP. Persons involved in reporting the occurrence of marine turtles in their area will receive tokens of appreciation.

9. Please put your garbage into designated bins or containers. Plastic bags thrown into the ocean are a big threat to turtles because turtles often mistake them for jellyfish and try to eat them.

10. Please report any person engaged in illegal, destructive fishing to the proper authorities.
Cyanide, dynamite or any other destructive fishing methods kill not only turtles but all marine-based resources such as corals and fish. Coral reefs are breeding and feeding areas of fish that provide food for all Filipinos.
